Son Goku is the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball series, spanning the original Dragon Ball, its sequel Dragon Ball Z and the further sequel Dragon Ball GT. He is based upon the monkey protagonist, Sun Wukong, from the Chinese novel Journey to the West.

With spiky black hair and his trademark orange/red and blue martial arts gi, Goku is known for his cheerful, energetic personality, fondness for competition (specifically fighting) and eating, as well as his kind and loving heart and an adorable lack of common sense. He has remarkable intuition at seeing the good in others despite their actions, though his capacity for forgiving his enemies has occasionally caused him further trouble. In the early Harmony Gold English Dragon Ball dub from the 1980's, he is known as Zero.
